Story Wear Turns Discarded Denim Into a New York Debut

Story Wear made its New York Fashion Week debut on Monday night at Ideal Glass Studios, and it did not call the result a runway show. “LOVE REVOLUTION: A Story of Taiwan” was staged as an immersive presentation, 30 looks and more than 70 handcrafted garments, accessories and wearable artworks set inside a room where fashion, art, music and storytelling ran at once. The backdrop read REVOLUTION, TAIWAN in graffiti. Almost everything on the models started life as somebody’s discarded denim.

The Taiwanese label is not new, just new here. Founded in 2018, Story Wear has become one of Taiwan’s leading sustainable brands and arrived in New York after presentations at Taipei Fashion Week and Rakuten Fashion Week TOKYO. It is a social enterprise as much as a label: it transforms discarded textiles into finished clothing while working with local artisans, second-career women, and disability advocacy groups. The sustainability claim is not a marketing layer bolted onto the clothes. It is the supply chain.

On the models that reads as denim worked every way a cutting table allows. Patchwork jackets pieced from mismatched washes. A sailor collar over a long panelled indigo skirt. Deconstructed trench coats rebuilt from old jeans, wide-leg trousers seamed from contrasting denim blocks, and a run of menswear that treated workwear as tailoring. One look was styled against a painted world map, a literal reading of a collection about where clothes come from and where they go next.

“Fashion has the power to tell stories that transcend borders,” said Kuan Chen, Founder and Creative Director of Story Wear. “Every garment represents the belief that small acts of love can create meaningful change, and that the future of fashion begins now, with how we value the people, environment, and communities around us.”

Credits, because the room took a village: hair by Aubrey Loots with Wella Professionals, makeup by The New York Makeup Academy, styling and casting by Jungle Lin, technical direction and production by 3rd Space Productions, set design by HG Pop Up, art by James Hsieh, music by the New Asia Chamber Music Society with DJ La Niña, videography by Minh Nguyễn, photography by George Elder with first looks by Lærke Rose Møllegaard, and PR and production by L.E.R. Public Relations. The show also carried backing from the Ministry of Culture of Taiwan and Taiwan’s Resource Circulation Administration.

The FVM read: sustainable fashion earns eye-rolls when the story is louder than the clothes. Story Wear inverts that. The denim craft would stand on a rack with no explanation attached, and the social enterprise behind it, the artisans and second-career women who do the work, is the part most labels would invent and this one actually runs. A strong first New York outing, and exactly the kind of merit FVM exists to verify.
